The Ancient of days is within you

The time has come

the kingdom is now

One day while speaking in Africa at pastor’s school, I found myself teaching about the eyes of our heart. In Matthew 5 Jesus speaks about the law and rather than saying not to worry about keeping those old commands anymore, Jesus takes them a step further. The law said do not murder, but do not even speak an insult. Do not even hold anger in your heart. You have heard it said, not to commit adultery, but do not even hold lust in your heart. As I taught these passages a picture dropped into my heart and I drew it on the chalkboard. In my heart was a stream that flowed downhill: starting at the eyes of our heart, flowing down to thoughts, moving to words, and cascading into actions.




In these passages, I saw clearly for the first time that Jesus is attempting to move us from trying to modify our actions to us changing the focus of the eyes of our heart. Most of the time when we attempt to modify our lifestyle we begin with our actions. These actions flow from our words, from our thoughts, and from the eyes of our heart. While it is possible to change our behavior for short bursts, it is only permanent change when the eyes of our heart are pointed towards what is good.


If you have found in the past few month that you have become anxious about the future, I would ask, where have the eyes of your heart been? Sometimes the circumstances we are in feel overwhelming, and we want God to pull us from these circumstances… but what if that is not how it works? What if you have all that you need to move beyond the troubles of these times right now?


Jesus said, “do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me” (John 14:1). Jesus says this right before he is arrested and crucified. He gives a focal point for his disciples in the coming days of trouble. Do not let your hearts be troubled, but believe. Focus on what you believe, on God, on the Eternal.


Philippians 4:6-8 says, 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.


This is a time of great joy. There is a lot to be thankful for and each moment holds in it the presence and life of God. Hold each moment and cherish it. You will soon find that the pain of the past and the anxiety for the future will fall away. Allowing this moment to be treasured and lovely will change your thoughts, your words, and your actions.


The reason Jesus teaches not only to obey the command, but to go to your heart in the matter is to make life easier. We want to do well. We want to speak life. We want to think beautiful thoughts. These things flow from the heart. I want to give you a few places where you can begin to believe and focus on God. Spend time today trying one.


God is everywhere. Look around and find God somewhere right now. Make this an activity of finding God throughout the day.


God is in you. Take a second to pray and do not look out at the sky, but pray to God within you. Does that change your prayer or your time with God?


God is with you in this moment. Breathe in and out for 5 minutes and with each breath listen to your surroundings. If your mind begins to run here or there, bring your focus back to your breath. Feel the peace that comes from being present with God.


God made you and all things with purpose. Take a look at something in nature or even your own body and marvel at the intention of God in creation.


I pray these focal points will begin a time of peace in you today. I am so thankful for what God is doing in our community and in our church. Blessings to you all today even in this moment.
